Making Of – Short Film “Heartless” – Part 2

“Making Of” Documentary of Short Film “Heartless”. “Heartless” is a black comedy story about a famous, retired cardiologist who at one day gets the sudden surprise of the Italian Mafia. They came specially from Calabria to London to persuade Doctor Hyman to perform a heart transplant on their boss Don Salvatore. “Heartless” is a 10 minutes graduation film which is made during the “Filmmaking Diploma Course” at the London Film Academy. It is shot on Super 16 mm during a period of 4 days: 28th Jan 2010 – 31st Jan 2010. “Heartless” is directed by Christiaan Neu and written by Michele Fiascaris.

LAST NIGHT
Alexis, (RACHEL DALE) wakes up on her floor disheveled and bruised, with no idea how she got there. Haunted by a mysterious man who seems to be following her, Alexis speeds down a one-way street of dangerous memories to discover the truth about last night. This is a student-produced film made in CSUN’s Intermediate Film Production class. We shot on Super 16mm film and edited with Avid. The color correction was done with Final Cut Pro. Breaking a heel off is much harder than you might think. It took a solid forty-five minutes with a steak knife and the sharp end of a hammer to get that sucker off. We tried to shoot the back-road scene where Alexis kills the mystery man first but got into a fight with the local sheriff after all our equipment was up and ready to go. The sheriff won and we scrambled to re-do our shot list and find a new location. When we finally did find a new spot to shoot, we discovered that the camera we got from CSUN’s equipment room (we had to rent a different camera than the one we used for all the other days of shooting) was busted with some kind of registration problem. It actually turned out cool for the sequence because it’s supposed to be a surreal dive into Alexis’ suppressed memory. Rachel Dale is one fearless actress, and I’m amazed she didn’t end up killing us all driving that car in the dark next to a six foot ravine and having to drop her cigarette and look down.
